Chapter 19: Falling

It was daylight when Sally rolled off the couch. Dazed, she shook her head and tried to figure out where she was. She was on the floor of Trent’s apartment. She still felt a little seedy, but much better. The events of yesterday came back in a horrible rush. Holy moly! She had managed to embarrass herself yet again. Why was it, whenever she was around Trent she acted like a complete moron? Sal folded up the blanket, gathered her bag, jacket, and shoes, and crept to the front door. Hoping not to wake anyone, she fiddled with the lock, turned the handle quietly, and carefully closed the door behind her.

At home, all was quiet. She went straight to the shower to freshen up. Apart from being embarrassed, she felt loads better. It must have been a twenty-four-hour gastro bug. After she dressed, she headed to the kitchen to make a coffee. She hadn’t heard them come in, but there they were, large as life, seated at the table, eating McD’s for breakfast. They must have kissed and made up. Bugger! Just when she was looking forward to having the couch and the TV remote back. Lucky, she didn’t bare her soul and tell Kat what she really thought of Rob.

“Morning sunshine, how are we feeling this morning?” Rob goaded. “We popped out to get breakfast and then boom you appear.”

“We would have got you breakfast if we’d known you were home,” Kat apologised.

Sal flicked the jug on. “Don’t mind me, I just need a coffee.”

“Was it a good night?” Rob wanted to know.

“Fine,” Sally replied coolly.

“You feeling better, hon?” Kat asked, genuinely concerned.

“Thought I may have had food poisoning but it was probably just a gastro bug. It’s doing the rounds at work,” Sal said.

“Sure, a gastro bug, sure.” Rob gave Kat an exaggerated wink.

Sal wanted to throttle him.

“Did you guys enjoy yourselves?” Sal eyed Kat wondering how she would answer, if she would mention their fight.

“Not as much as you did,” interjected Rob.

Sal stared at her coffee and wished Rob far, far, away.

When Rob left, Kat told her they hadn’t been happy with their meals either; she reckoned their food was average and cold. Ethan didn’t mind as he was busy chatting up the barmaid, but Pete had an absolute meltdown over the service being so slow. “Still,” she added, “it was nice of him to pay for all of us.”

“So, what happened after I left that Rob’s back in your good books?” Sal asked, confused.

“He apologised for being a dick, promising he’d spend more time with me, and then we had great make-up sex.”

Sal covered her ears. “Too much information.”

After getting Pete’s number from Kat, Sal sent Pete a text message, apologising for bunking early and telling him she’d caught a tummy bug, and thanked him for paying for her meal. Then, she sent a ‘Thank you for looking after me last night' text to Trent.

He replied, ‘See you at training, you are on extra drills.
